Getting a referral
You do not need a referral to see a psychologist, unless you intend to claim a Medicare rebate or seek reimbursement from an insurance company, including WorkCover for your appointments. You do not need a referral to claim a private health fund rebate.
Certain concerns are eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). If you have a valid MHTP with a referral, you can claim up to 10 Medicare rebates for psychology per calendar year. This will cover some of the appointment cost ($149.05), however, there will be an out-of-pocket amount. Once you reach the Medicare Safety Net for the calendar year, your rebate will be significantly higher. Discuss with your GP or Psychiatrist whether a MHTP is relevant for you.
